Dermal Fillers FAQ

Dermal filler procedures plump up undesirable folds and wrinkles to soften and contour lines resulting in a smoother, more youthful looking appearance. Treatments are especially effective for the lower face. Such as the Naso-Labial lines (between the nose and mouth), Marionette lines (around the mouth) and smile lines on the cheeks.

Dermal filler treatments can also boost the appearance of lips with a more sensual and youthful look. With time fine lines can form around the border of the lips as they gradually become thinner and smaller lips gradually become thinner and smaller. With the effective use of dermal fillers, lips become more enhanced and defined with a lift to the corners of the mouth.

The most widely used dermal fillers are Hyaluronic acid based. This is because Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally in human body and is safe. When used as a treatment, this is injected into the skin in a gel-like solution.

The results of dermal filler treatments usually remain for 6-12 months. Many of our clients return for top-ups when the effect begins to diminish. The effects can last longer with repeated treatments.  However, if you decide not to repeat the procedure the softer wrinkles and enhanced lip effects will diminish gradually until your skin returns back to the original appearance before the treatment.

After consultation with an Oris doctor, a personalized treatment can be decided upon, suitable for your individual needs.

The basic principle of dermal fillers is the signs of skin ageing is reduced due to the ‘plumping’ effect on the skin and. Although slightly different desired effects can be achieved with the use of different fillers, all results achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

The Epidermis and the Dermis make up the two layers of the skin. The Epidermis is the outer layer and functions as a barrier against the environment to protect against the elements and to regulate moisture loss from tissues and cells.

Directly below the Epidermis sits the Dermis. This contains structural elements of the skin, such as blood vessels, nerves and hair follicles. The Dermis contains collagen and this provides the skin with elasticity and strength to support the skin. With age the Epidermis gradually thins providing less protection to the Dermis layer. Added to this, production of collagen slows significantly and the existing collagen becomes less effective.

The consequence is an increase in the presence of wrinkles, folds, depressions and other associated signs of ageing. Dermal fillers act as a replenishment for the natural collagen which has been left ineffective through the ageing process and reverses the appearance of line and wrinkles through adding volume and increased hydration

Most people remember the unfortunate results Lesley Ash experienced in 2000 when she underwent lip filler injections. In this case liquid silicone was used in the injection and has no association to dermal fillers used today in aesthetic treatments.

Any negative side effects or problems with Hyaluronic Acid fillers are rare. If you do experience any issues, your Doctor is properly qualified to discuss the best course of corrective action. You are in safe hands.

- What is involved in a Dermal Filler Treatment?

All treatments follow a detailed pre-treatment consultation. At this consultation you will discuss with the practioner the look you wish to achieve. Your practitioner will advise you which treatments will be most effective at helping you reach this. If you decide to proceed the doctor will make a detailed recording of your medical history and conduct a careful examination of your face.

Following this, the doctor will explain which dermal filler option is best for your requirements and how you can expect to look afterwards.

The dermal filler is gently injected into specific areas of your skin to reduce the depth of the skin crease. Your practitioner will customise the exact depth and number of injections to give you the most natural result. Different dermal fillers can be used in different areas of your face to produce the most effective result.

The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes and the results are immediately visible. Patients can continue with their normal day after treatment.

You should leave the treated area alone for 48 hours to let it settle. We advise that you do not have a facial or similar treatment that may disturb the products or expose the newly-treated areas to strong sunlight for 2-3 days.

In the days after the treatment there may be some redness and minimal swelling, which normally settles in 1-2 days. Very occasionally patients can suffer some bruising at the injection site.

Your practitioner will arrange to see you for a review of your treatment two weeks later.
